These photos are all from my past year’s wandering during the pandemic, and were originally posted to Instagram. My Instagram posts have always been limited to pictures from an old iPhone SE and processed in Snapseed.

Staying home for a year has meant repeated walks through my home neighborhoods of Sellwood and Westmoreland, and an occasional extended adventure for a fresh perspective, all within the metropolitan bounds of Portland, Oregon. I’m attracted to houses, garages, vintage cars, trains, and the bits of commercial and industrial that complete the mix. With fewer opportunities for traditional street photography centered on people, I’ve replaced the people with mid-century vintage cars that are parked in the neighborhood, the garages that in many cases became too small for those cars of the 1950s, 60s and 70s, and the small houses that are obviously going to be replaced by the residential version of those boats from Detroit.

David McCarthy is a retired architect who has been using his daily walks through Portland neighborhoods to capture photos of small houses, garages and vintage cars. His work regularly appears in Northwest Review.
